What is the point of a musical if it has nothing to do with music?

Okay, I auditioned for my school musical, and I have been taking voice lessons since I was 7, and I have a gift of music in my blood. So, this is the second time I was casted an awful part in the musical. My mom called the producer, and said that what you are casted in the musical, has NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSICAL ABILITY. So, no matter how good someone's voice is, it will not effect the part they get at all. I understand that more people are musically challenged, than by acting. But still. If it's a MUSICAL. It should have SOMETHING to do with MUSIC! Might as well do any ordianary play. What do you think?

I think it should have to do with music. If you are vocally gifted then you will have no problem getting parts in many productions other than just this one place. A musical also has to do with putting together a production in which many people can preform and not all be the best musically, just a set of preformers.

I think a musical is stupid if you don't have music. And I had a basketball coach once who put in his daughter almost all the game.
there is no point of it!
Maybe you have a good voice in your opinion, but it might not be suitable for a musical, there are so many different styles of singing and for a musical the most important thing is that the words are understood, amybe your style makes it hard to hear the words? Or possibly they are looking more for acting talent than singing. They could also be prioritising for the older people inyour school as it's their last chance to perform there. Ask the producer why you didn't get a better role, maybe it's something you can improve on,
First of all, don't ever have your mom call the producer about something like that. And stop her if she tries to do it on her own. Nothing is more annoying than getting a call from someone's parent about the casting of a show. I know several people who were blacklisted from a theatre company because their moms called all the time, complaining about this and that.

A musical is not just music. There are many things involved. It's not a musical revue where the music rules and the acting is either non-existant or not important. Acting is just important as the music in a musical. It's a package deal. And in a school situation, I think it's important to make it a learning experience. Sometimes the best person for a certain role might not be the one with most talent, but the one who will learn the most from having the role.

If you feel like your talent is being wasted at your school, then you need to audition for community theatre or dinner theatre or something like that. You aren't required to participate only in school theatre productions, just because you are a student there. Branch out!
I agree, to a point. Since a musical production basically depends on the music to tell the story, it helps if the performer has a modicum of singing talent. (Though on the other hand, you never commented on the talent of the person who was cast in the role you wanted.) However, what the producer might have meant is that the ability to put your character into the song--to put heart and soul, to make the audience believe that it's natural for that particular character to convey the message better through music than through regular dialogue--is more important than how much talent goes into the performance. The worst singers can still put all there heart and soul into a performance to make it believable; while the most talented voices can totally screw up the mood of the production with a poor performance of the role.

The producer obviously put you would fit the character chosen for you. My advice would be to do the best job you know how to do with this part, and maybe when the next opportunity comes along, the producer will place you in a role more to your liking.

Good luck, anyway.
People sometimes miss the point - let them alone, they're miserable already
A musical is not all about singing a song well. Its about character and ambition. You need to become the character, put personality into it, have more to offer than just a well sung song.
