What is an old musical film prior to 1960?

I am doing a film project for school and i need to watch two musical films. and one needs to be prior to 1960 and the other that has a logical progression from the classic(prior to 1960) to contemporary. I was thinking of doing the musical film "Chicago"(2003) but i dont know a musical film that i could do slightly related to it that is prior to 1960.(maybe one that includes dancing or something related to "chicago" .

If not, than any other suggestions for good musical films would be wonderful!!!!!!! Thank you soo much! you would really help me out a lot!

Damn Yankees (1958). Bob Fosse choreographed it, and also directed the original B'way production of Chicago. The 2003 film uses many of his signature moves(the feline grace, the sharply-delineated poses, the black bowler hats, the "pop" into a pose, the overt sexuality).

It is past your stated time-frame, but Sweet Charity (1969, his film directorial debut) contains that most Fosse-esque of all Fosse routines: "Hey Big Spender"

All That Jazz (1979, also directed by Fosse) offers a thinly fictionalized version of Fosse (Roy Scheider as "Joey Gideon") and the heart attack he suffered while directing Chicago and simultaneously editing Lenny (1974) a biopic about pioneering "sick" stand-up comic Lenny Bruce. It just starts there. Not suitable for youngsters, although I loved it when it came out, and I was 16.

Fosse also had a "specialty" dance number, with Carol Haney, in Kiss Me Kate (1953).

You should do The Wizard of Oz. Maybe not the most original idea but it was a beautiful film, technicolor landmark. Then there's The Wiz, a film made in 1978. check them out on wikipedia and google them.

Questions like this make me feel so out of the loop. I think the last New Genre I was aware of was Fusion. Sheesh! Being the age I am, I have found that I have a certain amount of energy to spend each day. Chasing sub-genres that have probably been made up by the media in the first place aren't high on my priority list. I have always approached music in a relatively simplistic manner: if I like it, then I listen to it, regardless of the genre. You know as well as anyone that any genre of music has at least one hidden little gem residing within it. I don't believe in sifting through all music to find them; I'm not that voracious or consumed. If I come across something that piques my interest because it made my ears happy, then I'll pursue it. Probably why I have so many single entries in my collection. I'm aware that we humans are hardwired to create little boxes of categories to make our world more palatable and orderly, but for myself, I realize that entropy is inevitable, so I embrace panache. Ryan stfu about emo. Thats totally uncorrect; emo is not a blend of those two; at least the emotional hardcore and the indie emo scene weren't. Emotional hardcore was influenced by Husker Du and pioneered by former members of HxC punk band, such as Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto. The first indie emo band(SDRE) based their sound on post-hardcore bands like Fugazi, emotional hardcore, and post-punk band Mission of Burma. Bands after that lost most of the hardcore roots, but were still similar. Emo today is called emo becuase of a emo-influenced band, JEW, turned punk-pop.Emo today is generally bad and derived from pop punk, but bashing emo as a whole is retarded.

How about some Tropical music and Orchestra music to get Exotica genre. Martin Denny being one of the founding fathers of Exotica music. Also the Thrash Metal and Black metal creating Death metal genre, or Blues, Ragtyme, and Jazz to create Bluegrass. Bill Monroe comes to mind with creating Bluegrass. Throw in some crazy- a** chord progression, with electric instruments and you get Prog Bluegrass. Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt comes to mind here. The list is endless.

Edit: I'm into about everything. I listen to most anything, but feel sometimes I have'nt heard anything looking at the music discussed on Answers.

I heard some actors talking today and said that Les Miserables auditions would be happening in the next 3 - 4 months. They were adults so I don't know how the children's roles are cast. It may well be that they are stage school children. I suggest that you keep an eye on The Stage for auditions, have linked to the website, but you may have to wait a day or so before you can read the ads because subscribers to the newspaper get to see them first. You could get your parents to email Cameron Mackintosh's office to find out how and when children are cast. You should not do this yourself, as you are considered a child and will have to have your parents permission.

im redoing my room.

im looking for all types of musical things. I play piano and saxophone so any other instruments wouldnt make sense putting in my room

i would LOVE to find a cool wallie, or cutout (i have a horse one now) to put in my room...but i cant find any good ones. the only one i found was music notes, and i wish someone would make a grand piano one or something idk.

yea...this may sound a tad strange, but I was thinking that mabey i would be able to get a vocal (musical) scholarship to a college, but because i want to be an architect, you can see my dilema. Has anyone ever heard of a college/University that offers musical schollarships and also offers courses in architecture?

Anyone insane by loving musical songs?

And then they feel completely "geekish"?

Thats how I feel! Like I am an outstanding actress and have taken music lessons since age 10. (28 now) And I feel weird.

When I was little (11 elementary) We had a drama class every day for a week. And I remember in front of the whole 4 classes I had to sing a solo. the song was "Popular" from wicked. And then When I was 18 I had to sing "My strongest Suit" from adida at a talent show. And then I was in many plays like Last year I played Sharpay for High School Musical. And then in other plays like I was in Hairspray. (Penny) Is there something wrong with me? Or am I just a plain old geek! Or am I much more. Do I fit in? Please dont say, oh you are so talented!!! because I am not trying to brag. I think I know the answer, but actually is anyone like me?

OK. i def understand loving musicals but i do have one small problem with what you have written. If you are 28, than there is no way you were singing "popular" from wicked at the age of 11. Seeing as how the book was written into a musical and cast in 2001. Sorry. I would love to believe you but unfortunately being a musical lover I know this is false info.
There are MANY MANY MANY people out there in the world just like you who get emotionally attached to the genre of musicals in general, just because of the winning combination between music and drama that makes musicals so expressive and compelling. There are also quite a few people (among the general population and also within the theater industry) that find musicals campy, cheesy, and fake and what nothing to do with them. And of course there are some people in between. There is nothing wrong with you, you are a bit of a geek, but you are the luckiest kind of geek! You are a geek who is talented enough to go out and do the things you love, not just sit on the sidelines and...well...be geeky. Don't feel self-conscious, feel proud that you get to perform in ways that you love!

Is the musical "Wicked!" appropriate for a 10 year old?

My 10 year old daughter has the CD from the musical "Wicked!" and she loves it! I would like to take her to the musical, however I wonder about whether or not it would be appropriate for a 10 year old. Are there any parents out there who have seen the show, and/or taken their children? What are you thoughts? I have not seen the musical- although the entire household has the music memorized by now...

I took my 9 year old - and she LOVED it! I went to see it with my sister first and because I thought it might be a little mature for my daughter. However, I saw many "tweens" in the audience and they were enjoying the show as much as the adults were. So I took her to see it, but didn't mind seeing it again - it really is that good!

There is definitely adult humor, lots of sarcasm and 'read-between-the lines' moments, but nothing vulgar or what I would deem inappropriate. No foul language, no nudity, no "red cheek" moments as my own mom used to say :-) Just a fantastic musical Hope that helps~~

"Wicked" is fine for your 10 year old daughter to see.

I don't see why not. I never saw it, but my step daughter did with her Mom when she was 11. It's still one of her favorites.
I think its perfectly appropriate, its about the same caliber as "The Wizard of Oz" if you want to check that out yourself.

Well in my opinion you should not limit your daughter when it comes to art. Parents these days are so protective of things like this when there is so much more to worry about. Wicked is an appropriate musical for her age, but you should really be more open to what she watches. It's not fair to limit her knowledge of the arts.
I saw the show last week and loved it. I'm planning to take my daughter for her 11th birthday in August. She also loves the CD and sings all the songs alllll the time... especially 'Popular'. Take her to the show!
Well if you let her listen to the CD then there shouldn't be a problem with it. You should be glad that your child enjoys Musicals rather then the everyday video games, and television.

For my Musical Theater class, we have to sing a song with some choreography. It is our pre-audition for Cinderella, the musical we're doing next spring.

I want to sing God Help The Outcats from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

1. Are there any other songs I could do that are flowly enough to choreograph dancing to? (That can go with a Cinderella voice)

2. What should I sing for my audition song for Cinderella?

1) What about: "I could have danced all night" from My Fair Lady. Or "I feel pretty" from West Side Story. Or maybe "The lusty month of may" from Camelot. All of these require a sweet voice and some choreography.

2) I like "Ten Minutes Ago". for an audition song. Definitely a song where you can choreograph something nice and have that dreamy "Cinderella-ish" moment. (That is if you are allowed to sing something from the show.) If not...what about "Some day my prince will come" from Sleeping Beauty.

You know, another great song that you could sing with an awesome choreography is: "Out Tonight" from Rent! It's awesome! And you'll get everyone in there grooving with ya! Besides, it's not extremely difficult on vocals either!

You already have some good advice here. I agree that "No-one Is Alone" from Into The Woods, or "Home" from Beauty %26amp; The Beast would be great. They're similar in tempo and melodic shape to "God Help The Outcasts". You might also like to consider "Somewhere" from West Side Story. It's tricky to advise further without knowing your vocal range, but only choose a song you are 100% comfortable with. If there are particular notes you can't hit with ease, choose something else. You'll have enough to think about dancing and singing simultaneously without worrying about "here comes the high bit"! Break a leg :)

Well, first of all, God Help The Outcasts is going to be darn near impossible to dance along with. If your theatre teacher is really lenient on your sources, Once More With Feeling has a great song called Give Me Something To Sing About with a similar range that shows off singing/dancing well. (Once More With Feeling was the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but there's a separate score available for purchase.)

As for the Cinderella audition, most anything from Into The Woods would be perfect. (Sondheim) I auditioned into my theatre company with an adaptation of No One Is Alone, but there are lots of different songs for female vocalists in most every range imaginable.

What I Did For Love, from A Chorus Line, might also be worth looking into.

well i think it depends on what kind of voice you have. if you have a soft angelic like voice or a strong earthy voice. if you have the first kind of voice then probably sing a song from sleeping beauty, cinderella, or snow white. but if you have the second voice, head for more songs that are in hercules or the little mermaid.

as for the first question. unless you are going to do a really upbeat song, it will be kinda hard to choreograph it. unless you knew how to dance in a contemporary style.
First of all, try to NOT use ANY song from the show.

Musical Attire?

Im going to see wicked tonight...The musical. And I have no clue what to wear. Is it considered a "dressy Occasion" when you attend a musical like this?

...Im planning to wear a skirt..Is this ok?...I know that this is probably like a no-brainer..but I have no clue:) Please help. Thanks!

My shcool is doing high school musical for the spring musical....Do you think that is like dumb or cool....I am thinking about doing it but i don't know...i kind athink high shcool musical is childish..even thoguh the osngs are good...I don't want my friends to laugh at me.

Being in your school play is more than just the choice of play ... it's all about the camaraderie, the fun and the learning experience of doing a show and being on the stage.

High School Musical (if the rights are available) is a good ensemble piece because there are many opportunities for people other than the leads to shine.

I've been acting in community theater for 40 years or so. If you have the ability to make people laugh, you've got something a lot of actors wish they had! Find a friend who also wants to audition and experience the fun of theater.

A friend who laughs at you is no friend at all.

You definitly a should do it.

Even if your friends think its dumb just ignore them if it something you really want to do go for it.

High School Musical is a great musical to do because everybody already knows all of the songs and obviously its a big hit. The Stage production also added new songs to it that are really good like Cellular Fusion.

The play has so many different roles so its good odds you are more likely to get a role if you got the talents.

...heres the thing. What makes HSM so appealing and fun is the fact that is it so corney, it's one of the lamest shows i have ever seen but that's the best part. You can act in this and be silly and overly melodramatic and sort of cartoon-ish. The songs are bubble gum pop. It's meant to be fun and corny just like the musical Honk! (which is very well respected). So dont worry about your friends laughing at you, just be silly have fun and they'll love it. Trust me I've done some dumb shows but if you keep in mind that what your doing is suppost to be lame and that ppl are supposed to laugh at it, you can really open up and have fun with it... and Rogers and Hammerstein are boring and over played...

I just got done being in HSM, and I would reccomend being it 100%. I had the GREATEST time. It was soo much fun and I loved it. Don't let your friends get you down.
don't do high school musical. it's a stupid show. the story is dumb and cheesey, the songs are stupid, mindless pop songs. and there's no growth or depth to any characters.

do not be afraid of what ur friends think.. if there ur friends they'll think its cool and want to join themselves..I think that schools doing high school musical is a little over rated now .. but if i had it in my school i would join in and do it to because it would be fun

I have been in a lot of musicals, including the Music Man. I played Harold Hill. It was one of my favorite roles. Others include Charles in Pippin, Lazer Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof, Mr. Bumble in Oliver, the list goes on and on.

I was in the musical of the The Nutcracker. I was Clara. My boyfriend was the nutcracker. I was there when it was raining. I was soaking wet. And my teacher was The Aunt.
I've been in many musicals....too many to list. It started with "Little Mary Sunshine" (I played lil' Mary when she was just that....little) and my final bow was taken in "Bye Bye Birdie" (I played Rosie) Good luck in The Music Man Junior. Zaneeta is a great role!
Last year, I played Belle in our 8th grade musical, Beauty %26amp; the Beast. It was sooo much fun! I loved the costumes %26amp; set %26amp; of course, above all the MUSIC!!! My favorite musical is Les Mis, though. I hope you do well as Zaneeta! She is a great character!

Is there a website to announce auditions for a new musical? I am in NYC and I have a show I will be directing hopefully in the fall. I have a few backers and we are looking into a theater (Off-Off B'way status). I want to get a jump on casting because I feel being able to have the right voices for the musical numbers will help entice more backers. I will directing myself.

I'll looking for actors/singers 18-25 for a "High School Musical" type show, circa 1962.

4 Female roles, 6 Male roles, plus small chorus

I think the hardest role to fill will be the 2nd male lead, "the jock", who must act (comedy) and sing, plus look and act very male. Any help?

The best place to list auditions is Backstage. www.backstage.com. Go to the website and you will see a link for the audition page. There is a "form" you need to fill out to post an audition notice which includes cast breakdown, requirements for audition, callbacks, location, time, etc. The more specific you are the better! Backstage also gives you option of leaving as an online audition, or it can go in their weekly paper. Every actor in NYC uses it! Since you are in the early stages of casting, you can put in a call for headshot and resumes only. You can also use Playbill, www.playbill.com. Another great tool is www.theatremafia.com

I want to audition for musical theater and need a song from a broadway musical. I don't know many broadway shows and would like something for an alto mabe. Any suggestions or places on line i can get the sheet music for free?

It really depends on the show, and the character you are auditioning for. Try to find songs written by the same composer or in the same style as the show, and also one that reflects the character. Also, try to stay away from High School Musical, Wicked, or any other overdone peices. The directors will have heard these a thousand times before. My best suggestion is to find something little-known and right for your voice online. Google searches work fine. MusicalTheaterAudition.com also has some great ones. While your there, look up the show; it has character/plot descriptions and might help you choose a song. Break a leg! =]

Get limewire and type in Broadway karaoke - and then find the vocal version from the real show! You won't be able to get any free sheet music - which is the best way to go! You could go to musicalcreations.com and find one as well.

I was actually rather impressed. You have a very nice voice. I would recommend getting voice lessons and working with an instructor to put together an audition tape.

Somethings you can start working on now. 1. Opening your mouth more when you sing. The more space to have inside your mouth the more sound will come out. 2. Also make sure that you tongue is flat on the bottom of your mouth. Having your tongue raised like an arch will block the air and sound coming out. Singing in front of the mirror will help. 3. Take big breaths from you diaphragm, not your upper chest. The bigger and deeper the breath, the purer your sound will be and there will be more power behind the notes.

These are tips that my voice teacher gave to me and it helped a lot!!
